Saturn Energy Series

The Saturn Energy series of products is a complete hardware platform for the remote, centralized monitoring and control of electrical loads and generators. Saturn Energy technology gives network operators the power to match demand with supply by means of a scalable, fine-grained load control capability based on pre-existing communications infrastructure.

For energy consumers, the Saturn Energy platform provides detailed insight into energy consumption trends, promoting the efficient use of power by identifying waste and providing a mechanism to control consumption.

The Saturn Energy range enables control and monitoring of electrical loads and generators at the circuit level and can be applied to most single phase applications.

How it Works

Every Saturn Energy network is comprised of an ESBox LT Gateway device and one or more Power Meters, such as the Mini Smart Meter and Mini CT Meter. Power Meters within the network report consumption data at a configurable interval to their parent ESBox, which stores data locally and transmits to a central server upon request.

  • Saturn Energy Power Meters conform with the ZigBee Home Automation standard and can be used with any compliant ZigBee HA gateway device:
  • + The ESBox LT ZigBee-Ethernet Gateway
  • + The Control4 Home Automation Controller
  • + Other third-party ZigBee gateways and modules (e.g. Telegesis, TI, NXP)

The Mini Smart Meter and Mini CT Meter devices are available in a form factor identical to standard 1U DIN rail mounted Miniature Circuit Breakers, permitting straightforward integration into existing switchboard installations.

ESBox LT ZigBee-Ethernet Gateway SS9002 PDF

The ESBox links the ZigBee HAN with the outside world and provides network management and data storage functionality within the Saturn Energy network. Acting as a gateway between the Internet and the consumer's premise, the ESBox provides the end-to-end connectivity required to implement numerous energy services, such as distributed demand management and remote monitoring of energy consumption and efficiency.

The ESBox device is simple to install, stores up to 28 days of measurement data(1), and enables Over The Air (OTA) updates of devices installed in the field.

Ease of Installation: Installing an ESBox LT is quick and easy; requiring only a broadband internet connection at the site. The ESBox LT features zero-configuration for most sites,(2) reducing deployment and maintenance costs to operators.

Secure Access: The Saturn Energy system uses Enterprise grade, standards based security to ensure the protection of customer information.

Open Protocol: The ESBox back-haul protocol specification is freely available allowing custom implementations by service operators.

Range: The ESBox comes standard with an external antenna and high-gain RF amplifier.

Mini Smart Meter SS9000 PDF

The Mini Smart Meter is a tightly integrated switch and energy meter device designed to sit inline with individual electrical circuits in a residential or commercial site.

The device is available in a 1U DIN rail package which can be easily retrofitted into existing switchboards.

Fine Grained Control: The Mini Smart Meter enables cost-effective metering and control of each circuit at a site, providing a deeper insight into the site's energy consumption.

  • Detailed Metrics: The Mini Smart Meter is rated as a Class 1 meter, and provides comprehensive time series data on connected loads, including:

Ease of Integration: A Mini Smart Meter can be installed in minutes by a qualified electrician, with a process almost identical to the installation of a standard circuit breaker.

The Mini CT Meter can be used to monitor and control single-phase domestic loads of almost any size, and suits a range of applications including whole-of-site metering, sub-metering, and Demand Management.

The device is available in a 1U DIN rail package with an external current transformer, and can be easily retrofitted into existing switchboards.

Ease of Integration: The Mini CT Meter can be installed in minutes by a qualified electrician, with a process almost identical to the installation of a standard circuit breaker.

  • Detailed Metrics: The Mini CT Meter is rated as a Class 1 meter when equipped with a suitable current transformer, and provides comprehensive time series data on connected loads, including:

Load Control: The Mini CT Meter includes a closed-contact switch for triggering an external relay, contactor or control device to switch arbitrarily large loads.

External CT: Saturn South offers a range of standard current transformers to suit common domestic and commercial loads. Alternatively, custom current transformers may also be used with the device.

Mini Three Phase Meter SS9005 PDF

The Mini Three Phase Meter can be used to monitor and control three-phase loads or multiple single-phase loads in domestic and commercial environments.

The device is available in a 2U DIN rail package and is supplied with three external current transformers.

Range Extender SS9006 PDF

The Range Extender enables ZigBee networks to be extended through large sites in which the site gateway can not be placed in close proximity to all devices.

The device uses mesh networking technology to improve network reliability and provide redundancy in ZigBee Home Automation networks.

Saturn South Range Extender

Easy Installation: The Range Extender is simply paired to the ZigBee network and placed in the most favourable position to communicate with other devices.
In large sites multiple Range Extenders can be chained, or placed strategically to improve the stability of the network by providing additional signal paths to each device.




  • (1): Based on 8 site devices with measurements stored at 5 minute aggregations.
  • (2): Dependent on the nature of the site network and on the details of the backhaul server operation.
  • (3): A circuit breaker must be installed upstream on the same circuit as the device. Saturn South load control products must not be relied on to provide primary safety protection.
